The air ambulance has barely changed in 40 years

Most emergency medical helicopters are general-purpose aircraft adapted for the role. They are costly to fly, constrained by terrain and weather, and carry a disproportionate safety burden. Aurenda set out to fix that at the source, in the aircraft itself.

The Avectra 101, a category replacement

The Avectra 101 is not a modified helicopter. It is a hybrid gyroplane-helicopter, purpose-built so that a single aircraft is safer, cheaper and cleaner at the same time.

  • VTOL mode lifts the aircraft vertically for take-off and landing from any site, no runway needed.
  • Gyroplane mode lets the rotor autorotate freely in cruise for a stable, low-drag, fuel-efficient flight.
  • Engine failure becomes a controlled glide, not a freefall.

Is Aurenda an air ambulance service?
No. Aurenda is a manufacturer. We design and build air ambulance helicopters for the operators, health systems and providers who fly emergency medical missions. Aurenda does not operate flights or provide emergency care itself.
What is the Avectra 101?
The Avectra 101 is Aurenda's hybrid gyroplane-helicopter, an air ambulance aircraft built from a clean sheet for the emergency medical mission. It offers vertical take-off and landing from any site, a gyroplane cruise on a rotor that cannot stall, no tail rotor, and 35 to 40% lower fuel burn than a conventional HEMS helicopter.
What makes the aircraft safer than a conventional helicopter?
The safety is built into the airframe. With no tail rotor, no exposure to vortex ring state, and a rotor that autorotates and cannot stall, several of the most dangerous helicopter failure modes are engineered out. An engine failure becomes a controlled glide rather than a freefall.
