The Avectra 101 is not a modified helicopter. It is a hybrid gyroplane-helicopter engineered from a clean sheet for the aeromedical mission, combining the vertical access of a helicopter with the inherent safety and efficiency of gyroplane flight.

The result is an aircraft that can reach a rooftop, a roadside or a mountainside, then cross the distance to a trauma centre on a stable, low-drag, fuel-sipping cruise.

VTOL mode, access anywhere

A powered rotor lifts the aircraft vertically for take-off and landing. True vertical operations from rooftops, roadsides, mountains and helipads, with no runway and no large landing zone required.

Gyroplane mode, safe efficient cruise

In forward flight the rotor autorotates freely with no engine power driving it, an inherently stable, low-drag profile that burns far less fuel.

Failure becomes a glide

Because the rotor is already autorotating, an engine failure results in a controlled glide to the ground, not a freefall. Vortex ring state and tail-rotor failure are engineered out entirely.

Why is a gyroplane rotor safer?
A freely autorotating rotor cannot enter an aerodynamic stall or vortex ring state, and the aircraft has no tail rotor to fail. If engine power is lost, the aircraft continues in a controlled autorotative glide rather than dropping. Several of the highest-risk helicopter accident scenarios simply cannot occur.
Can it land where a helicopter cannot?
Its wider environmental envelope, tolerance of higher winds and ability to work from very constrained sites, means it can operate in conditions and locations where conventional HEMS aircraft would be grounded, while still offering true VTOL from rooftops, roadsides and mountainous terrain.
